Transform Boring Windows with This Easy Craftsman Trim Tutorial

July 25, 2025 by kelsey.mackall

I finished the coffered ceiling in this room and the windows just felt so bare, it was time to trim them out. With clean lines and timeless charm, Craftsman-style window casing adds architectural interest and instantly makes your home feel more custom. The best part? You can create this look using just a few basic boards: 1x4s, 1x6s, and 1x2s.

Whether you’re updating one window or giving your whole home a trim refresh, this project is beginner-friendly and totally doable in a weekend. Let’s break it down step by step!

Get Started on Your Easy Craftsman Trim

Start by measuring your window to determine the length of each piece. You’ll need two vertical 1x4s for the side casings, a 1×6 for the sill, another 1×6 for the apron (the piece just below the sill), a 1×6 for the head casing across the top, and finally, a 1×2 to sit flat along the very top as a decorative cap. Begin by installing the sill—cut your 1×6 so that it extends 1–1.5 inches beyond the vertical trim pieces on either side. Attach it securely and make sure it sits level, as everything else will build off of it.

Next, install the side casings by cutting two 1x4s to run from the top of the sill to just above the window. Nail them in place using a level to keep everything straight. Then attach the apron—a horizontal 1×6—directly underneath the sill, aligning it with the outer edges of the side trim. Now you’re ready for the top. Cut a 1×6 to serve as the head casing, letting it overhang slightly beyond the side trim for a more finished look. Finally, place a 1×2 flat on top of the 1×6 to serve as a cap, again allowing for a small overhang on each end to complete that classic Craftsman profile.

Once everything is installed, fill the nail holes with wood filler and caulk any gaps for a seamless finish. Lightly sand all surfaces to prep for paint or stain. A crisp white paint gives it a clean, traditional look, while a rich wood stain adds warmth and character. Either way, this easy trim project turns plain windows into beautiful focal points that feel both polished and timeless.

Easiest Window Trim Ever

Craftsman-style window trim is a satisfying weekend project that adds major visual appeal without a major cost. With just a few boards and some basic tools, you can create a high-impact, designer-worthy detail that looks like it’s always been there. I mean, just check out the playroom!

The Ultimate DIY Guide for You to Hang Wallpaper (Yes, You Can Do It!)

July 25, 2025 by kelsey.mackall

My bedroom was feeling so boring, and after wrapping up several other projects, it was finally time to jazz up my space. If you’ve been itching to give a room in your house a bold new look, wallpaper is one of the easiest ways to add instant charm, personality, and texture. I chose the Haveli Block Print in Blue/Tan (Matte Vinyl) from the new Fariha Nasir x Chasing Paper collection, and it’s truly everything wallpaper dreams are made of. Whether you’re drawn to vintage florals, modern geometrics, or playful prints for a kid’s room, the right wallpaper can completely transform your space—and while the idea of hanging it might feel a little intimidating, don’t worry—I’ve broken it down step-by-step so even first-timers can pull it off like a pro.

Anyone Can Hang Wallpaper

Start by cleaning your walls until they’re dry, smooth, and free of dust or grime—especially important in kitchens and bathrooms. Remove nails, switch plates, and outlet covers. Patch up any holes or cracks, then sand them smooth.

Pro Tip: If you’re working with dark-colored walls, apply a primer first to prevent the old color from showing through.

Next, measure the width of your wallpaper. Using a level or plumb line, draw a vertical guideline on the wall where you’ll place your first panel. Don’t rely on the corners—they’re rarely straight!

Cut your first strip a few inches longer than the wall’s height to give yourself room for trimming. If your wallpaper isn’t pre-pasted or peel-and-stick, brush or roll on a thin, even layer of paste. Then gently fold the paper paste-side in (a method called “booking”) and let it rest for a few minutes.

Line up the first strip with your vertical guide, leaving a bit of extra at the top and bottom. Press the wallpaper onto the wall from top to bottom, smoothing out air bubbles and extra paste as you go with a brush or smoothing tool.

Trim any extra paper along the ceiling, baseboards, and outlets using a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. Take your time and replace the blade often for clean, precise cuts.

Continue with the next strip, carefully matching the pattern at the seam. Overlap slightly if needed, depending on the wallpaper’s design. Smooth it down and wipe away any extra paste with a damp sponge.

Let the wallpaper dry completely—usually about 24 hours. Keep the room well-ventilated, and avoid touching or repositioning any panels during that time.

That’s a Wrap!

Hanging wallpaper takes patience, but once you get the hang of it, it’s incredibly rewarding. Whether you’re doing an accent wall or covering a whole room, wallpaper brings so much personality to a space. Just look at my bedroom! If that doesn’t convince you of the impact wallpaper can have, I don’t know what will. Don’t be afraid to jump in and get started!

Transform A Door With Paint and Gel Stain For a Real Wood Look

March 31, 2025 by kelsey.mackall

If you love the rich, warm look of wood but have a metal, fiberglass, or plain painted door, you don’t have to replace it to achieve a stunning wood-grain finish. With a little creativity and a few simple materials, you can transform an ordinary door using paint and gel stain. This budget-friendly DIY project mimics the depth and texture of real wood, giving your door an elegant, high-end appearance.

Begin to Transform Your Door

Before you begin, gather your materials. You’ll need a base coat of latex paint in a light tan or beige, which will serve as the “wood base” under the stain. A gel stain in a wood tone—such as walnut, mahogany, or oak—will provide the rich color and grain effect. Additional tools like a foam roller, good quality paintbrushes, a wood-graining tool (optional), painter’s tape, rags, and a clear polyurethane sealer will help you achieve a professional-looking finish.

Start by preparing your door. Remove any hardware, or cover it with painter’s tape to protect it from paint and stain. Clean the surface thoroughly with soap and water or a degreaser to remove dust, dirt, or grease. If your door has a glossy finish, lightly sand it with 120- to 220-grit sandpaper to help the paint adhere better, then wipe away any dust with a clean, dry cloth. Since my door has a 9 pane window I used liquid masking to create barrier between the paint and the window. This way I would be able to paint the grid of the window without getting paint all over the window.

Next, apply the base coat of latex paint using a foam roller or a good quality paintbrush. One or two coats should be enough to create an even foundation. Allow the paint to dry completely—typically about 4 to 6 hours—before moving on to the next step. This base coat is essential because it will provide the undertones of the wood look once you apply the gel stain.

Time For the Magic of Gel Stain

Once the base coat is dry, it’s time to create the wood grain effect using the gel stain. Work in small sections, applying the stain with a brush in long, even strokes that mimic the natural direction of wood grain. If you want a straight-grain look, use a dry brush to drag through the stain, creating subtle grain lines. For a more detailed, realistic effect, a wood-graining tool can be rocked through the stain to form knots and deeper grain patterns. If the stain appears too dark or heavy in some areas, you can gently wipe it away with a clean rag to create variations in tone. Let each coat of stain dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually about 6 to 8 hours, and apply a second coat if you want a deeper, richer wood look.

After the gel stain has fully dried, you can add final details to enhance the wood effect. A small detail brush is great for adding extra grain lines or shading for more depth. Once you’re satisfied with the appearance, let the stain cure for at least 24 hours before sealing it. Applying a clear polyurethane sealer will protect the finish and give it a polished, durable look. Use a brush or foam roller to apply the sealer in thin, even coats, choosing a satin or semi-gloss finish for a natural wood appearance.

Anyone Can Transform Their Door!

With a little patience and creativity, you can completely transform a plain door into a beautiful wood-look feature. This technique works well for both interior and exterior doors and can be customized to match your home’s decor with different stain shades. Instead of spending hundreds on a new wooden door, try this DIY method and enjoy a stunning result at a fraction of the cost. Let us know how your project turns out!
